Officials from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) have confirmed that the personal information of up to 4 million current and former Federal employees may have been compromised. Click here to read more.

It's unclear what kind of personally identifiable information was stolen, however, the Washington Post reports that anonymous US officials stated the data potentially included employees' job assignments, performance ratings and training. Beginning June 8 and extending through June 19, OPM will be sending notices to individuals whose information was potentially compromised during this incident.

Here are a few tips from the team at LifeLock
if you believe your information has been compromised in this attack:

1: Assume your most sensitive personal data has been compromised.
You should pay close attention to your finances and credit for years to come. Social Security numbers and dates of birth are permanent credentials, so even if new accounts are not opened immediately, they could be opened at a much later date. A Social Security number can be used to open a new credit account, open a cell phone account or even fraudulently file a tax return.

2: Change passwords for important email accounts, financial accounts and social media accounts.
It never hurts to make sure your important accounts have protection. Your email address could have been stolen, so it's important to be on the lookout for phishing emails, which are designed to trick you into handing over more personal information or loading malware on to your computer. If you want to log into an account, type the URL into your browser yourself.

3: Monitor transactions by keeping an eye on your financial accounts.
Officials from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) have confirmed that the personal information of up to 4 million current and former Federal employees may have been compromised.

4: Evaluate your identity protection options.
A free credit monitoring service and identity theft insurance are being offered by the OPM, and you may want to sign up. However, identity thieves can use your identity to open new financial accounts, steal your tax return and steal other benefits. LifeLock offers proactive identity theft protection across our extensive network†, and if you do become a victim of identity fraud, our Identity Restoration Specialists will assist you with helping resolve the $1 Million Guarantee‡.
